Waterfronts: Funeral of sailor cancels races

For the second consecutive weekend, sailboat races were cancelled at Channel Islands and Ventura harbors. One race was cancelled because of stormy conditions, and the other so that racers could attend memorial services for a recently deceased sailor.

World Superbikes champion Carlos Checa recovered from a crash in the first race to easily win the second on the season-opening weekend for the international motorcycle series at Phillip Island on Sunday. Pinturault, Mancuso win parallel slalom WCup races

Alexis Pinturault of France and American Julia Mancuso dominated parallel slalom World Cup races on a giant ramp in Moscow on Tuesday — the only city event on the Alpine circuit this season.
